Dear friends,
Originally, we had hoped to have all the audio tracks for our new album ready for release by this time, but delays are pretty much required in collaborative creative endeavors. 🙂
We do, however, have three tracks in practically-perfect condition, and we wanted to share them with you on this Christmas Eve. There may be a few changes made to them by the time the album is published, but they are so minor that you probably won’t even notice! We already shared the CD cut of The Song of Hard Times with you (find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-track-song-44456450 ) and in this post, we are proud to present our arrangements of When I’m Gone by Phil Ochs and Lady of the Harbor by Joe Jencks.
While we could say volumes about each of these songs (you can read some of those volumes about When I’m Gone in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-track-when-37928966), today we want to let the lyrics speak for themselves.
We wish you safe and happy holidays!
With deepest gratitude,
Lauren, Jeremy, Lynn, and Will
LADY OF THE HARBOR
Joe Jencks
From far away and distant lands
The tempest tossed with hopeful hearts and calloused hands
Reach for the light, the torch held high
And cast their gaze upon the Lady of the Harbor
And she welcomes them with open arms
She says let my children in
Shine on, Shine on
Oh you Lady of the Harbor
And so it was, our families
They sailed from Poland, Britain, France, and Germany
Their earthly cares, packed in their bags
They cast their gaze upon the Lady of the Harbor
And she welcome them with open arms
She said let my children in
Shine on, Shine on
Oh you Lady of the Harbor
Now we’re locking down the borders and we’re filling up the jails
And we say they don’t belong
How conveniently do we forget
That we’ve all come to sing the same sweet song
Will the dream survive the strain
Will huddled masses have a chance to learn its sweet refrain
Or will we fall into our fears
And turn our backs against the Lady of the Harbor.
No, we’ll welcome them with open arms
And say, “Let her children in”
Shine on, Shine on
Oh you Lady of the Harbor
One quick note on the lyrics: We made our arrangement of this song with Joe’s blessing, and we want to point out a few places where we modified the lyrics. The first chorus is Joe’s original words, and we changed each subsequent chorus slightly so it was speaking directly to the verse before it. We also changed the first two lines in verse 2 to reflect some of the places our families came from. Joe’s original lyrics, which speak to his heritage, are: “And so it was, with my own kin / They sailed from Sweden and from France, and Ireland.” Please do check out Joe’s music and support his work at JoeJencks.com
WHEN I’M GONE
Phil Ochs
There’s no place in this world where I’ll belong when I’m gone
And I won’t know the right from the wrong when I’m gone
You won’t find me singing on this song when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
And I won’t breathe the bracing air when I’m gone
And I can’t even worry ’bout my cares when I’m gone
I won’t be asked to do my share when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
And I won’t be running from the rain when I’m gone
And I can’t even suffer from the pain when I’m gone
Can’t say who’s to praise and who’s to blame when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
I won’t see the golden of the sun when I’m gone
The evenings and the mornings will be one when I’m gone
Can’t be singing louder than the guns when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
All my days won’t be dances of delight when I’m gone
The sands will be shifting from my sight when I’m gone
Can’t add my name into the fight when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
I won’t be laughing at the lies when I’m gone
I can’t question how or when or why when I’m gone
Can’t live proud enough to die when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
There’s no place in this world where I’ll belong when I’m gone
And I won’t know the right from the wrong when I’m gone
You won’t find me singing on this song when I’m gone
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here
